Scripture Union Daily Guide 27th March 2025 Outline
After the death of all the 603,550 men enumerated by Moses in chapter one, except Joshua and Caleb, God asked Moses to take another Census of their offspring, a generation born in the wilderness (Numbers 26:1-4). Notice the total number this time, a reduction of almost 2000 men. This decline indicates that the number of new births did not entirely make up for those who died in the desert, an indicator of the impact of God’s judgment on the rebellious people.
The reason for the census this time would seem to relate to the distribution of territory among the respective clans, some of which were considerably more numerous than others (Numbers 26:5-62). Both times, only men of fighting age were counted. If the women and children, and all the older men were added, the number would be in the region of two million. This gives us an indication of the scale of the miracles of feeding and provision which God performed for his people during their desert journey for forty years.
Read Numbers 26:64-65 meditatively and compare these to Deuteronomy 32:48-51. Though our God is a loving Father, He is also a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29). Will we not rather live our time here in fear and holiness (1 Peter 1:17)!
